Privacy and the Internet

Privacy is a very complex issue for E-commerce users as well as providers. Privacy is a concept, a belief of wanting to be left alone, and being able to control information about one’s self. P3P was an attempt to enable users to understand the consequences of providing sensitive information about themselves to websites. Unfortunately there has been great debate as to whether P3P can alleviate personal privacy concerns individuals have, and whether it creates a sense of trust between the user and the website. In an attempt to determine how P3P is being used in an e-commerce environment, we have completed a survey of websites in this area that will outline the current use of P3P. To finish off the presentation I will also explain the future of P3P and how it might be adopted to create greater value for the companies that are currently implementing the protocol.
